Areas of Expertise

Expert in Sustainable Development with extended field experience with small and medium scale enterprises in developing countries.

The successful establishment of three businesses in three continents has given me on the ground experience that I gladly combine with my analytical background. I have ample know-how of small and medium scale business in developing countries with personal involvement at all levels including: rural sourcing of inputs for industry, transformation processes, local and international marketing, export requirements to and from Europe and the USA, organic and fair trade certification methods as well as promotion at international trade fairs.

With further professional experience as program manager at two UN Agencies I have good understanding of the complexities for international organizations in reaching their set goals, evaluating their impact and working in high risk environments. Hansa Coffee, Sri Lanka

June 1996 – March 1998

Founder and General Manager

Hansa Coffee was established as a response to the results of the IRDP market study amongst small scale coffee producers. It concluded that there was a need for new transformation processes in order to reach better markets and increased income for small scale integrated farmers in rural Sri Lanka. The company was formed with a private investment and in coordination with a local NGO and the IRDP.

Working along the IRDP Hansa Coffee trained coffee producing farmers on quality requirements, introduced a fair price mechanism for quality standards, introduced new post harvesting methods, proper roasting and milling techniques and packaging in local and international standard. The initiative brought a product onto the local market that was first not available.

At our departure, Hansa Coffee was sold to a private entrepreneur. Twelve years later Hansa Coffee still sells high quality coffee in Sri Lanka and outside. It remains profitable years after being started with only a $3000 investment. Hansa Coffee encourages Organic production and gives training on sustainable agriculture techniques.
